Healing Is Not Linear
Why progress doesn’t look the way you thought it would
Some days you feel like you’re finally okay.
You wake up lighter.
You laugh without forcing it.
You think about the past and it doesn’t hit as hard.
You start to believe you might actually be healing.
And then… out of nowhere…
A song.
A smell.
A memory.
A random Tuesday.
And suddenly you’re right back in it.
Crying in the car.
Staring at the ceiling at 2 a.m.
Wondering why you’re not “over it” yet.
If this has happened to you, hear this:
You are not broken.
You are not weak.
You are not back at square one.
You are healing.
The Lie We’re Told About Healing
We’re taught that healing should look like a straight upward line —
that every day should feel a little better than the last.
But real healing looks more like a spiral.
You revisit the same pain, the same memories, the same emotions —
but each time you return with more awareness, more tools, more strength.
It may feel like regression.
In reality, it’s integration.
You are processing layers.
Triggers Are Not Failures
Something important to understand:
Being triggered does not mean you haven’t healed.
It means there is still something tender that deserves care.
Your body remembers what your mind tries to move past.
Trauma isn’t stored like a story in a book —
it lives in your nervous system, your muscles, your breath, your reactions.
So when something hits you unexpectedly,
your system is saying:
“This still needs attention.”
Not judgment.
Not shame.
Attention.
Progress Isn’t Loud
Healing is often quiet.
It’s choosing not to text them back.
It’s setting a boundary without explaining yourself.
It’s leaving situations earlier.
It’s noticing red flags faster.
It’s apologizing to yourself for what you tolerated.
These changes don’t always feel dramatic,
but they are profound.
You may not notice how far you’ve come
because you are living inside the transformation.
You Can Miss the Past Without Wanting It Back
One of the most confusing parts of healing is this:
You can miss something that hurt you.
You can miss who you were.
You can miss the good moments.
You can miss the familiarity.
Missing it does not mean it was right for you.
It means you are human.
Grief doesn’t only show up when someone dies.
It shows up whenever something meaningful ends.
Setbacks Are Part of the Process
A hard day does not erase your progress.
A hard week does not undo your growth.
A relapse into old feelings does not cancel your healing.
Think of it this way:
If you broke a bone, some days would hurt more than others —
especially when the weather changes or you move a certain way.
That doesn’t mean the bone isn’t healing.
It means it’s still sensitive.
Your heart works the same way.
Healing Changes You in Invisible Ways
You may not see it yet, but you are different now.
You pause before reacting.
You question what you once accepted.
You recognize patterns sooner.
You crave peace more than chaos.
These shifts are subtle but life-altering.
Healing isn’t about becoming who you were before.
It’s about becoming someone who no longer accepts what broke you.
Give Yourself the Grace You Give Others
If your best friend were hurting,
you wouldn’t tell them to hurry up and get over it.
You wouldn’t shame them for crying.
You wouldn’t expect perfection.
Offer yourself that same compassion.
You are not on anyone else’s timeline.
If Today Is One of the Hard Days
Do less.
Breathe more.
Drink water.
Step outside.
Put your hand on your heart.
Remind yourself:
“I am safe right now.”
Healing doesn’t always require action.
Sometimes it requires gentleness.
A Soft Truth to Hold Onto
You are not starting over.
You are revisiting the wound
with new awareness
and a stronger version of yourself.
Even on your worst days,
you are not who you were when this first happened.
From C’est La Vie NOLA 🤍
Life gets real.
Healing gets messy.
But growth doesn’t ask for perfection —
only persistence.
One breath.
One hour.
One day at a time.
You are allowed to heal slowly.
You are allowed to have setbacks.
You are allowed to still be in progress.
Affirmation
I trust my healing process, even when it feels messy and non-linear.
Journal Prompt
Where in your life can you recognize progress that doesn’t “feel” like progress?
If this spoke to you, save it for the days when you forget.
You are not falling apart.
You are unfolding.
